Before I start, if this idea has been tried and I just don't know about it, please E-Mail me and tell me how it worked. Otherwise, read on.
Now, I know what you're thinking. If you're a die-hard L5R player, you're thinking "Booster draft? Isn't that for those annoying Magic players?" But it doesn't have to be that way. I admit, I do play Magic (although only fun, theme decks, never tournament level decks), and I have played a booster draft or two. And I have to say that they are quite interesting. You generally get a decent selection of cards (barring the occasional "rare hoarder") and it makes for an interesting game, definitely on a different level from sealed deck play.
Ok, now that I've convinced you that a booster draft isn't a bad word, you must be thinking, "Ok, it works for Magic, but how can it work for L5R? There aren't any strongholds in booster packs (besides Time of the Void and Soul of the Empire)!" Well, you don't draft all of your cards. You start out with one starter and one booster pack, you pick about 20 cards for the start of your dynasty and fate decks, and then you draft 25 cards out of the rest of your dynasty cards and after that's done, you draft 25 of your fate cards. (I haven't tried it, different numbers might work better)
After you're done drafting, you fix up your deck and play a tournament. Yes, it's just that simple. You generally get more in clan personalities, and more useful fate cards. It works best if you limit the number of people using the same clan, either by using a basic set, or using more than one expansion set.
So, sound interesting? Then go try it, and please, please, E-Mail me and tell me if it was a complete success,
a complete waste of time, or something inbetween. Thank you for your time.
